Types of Structures That Use Double Channel Steel

Frequently Used in Buildings
Double channel steel is a type of hot-rolled metal that is used to build various types of structures. They are often used to make beams and columns that support other metal or wooden frames, but they can also be used to create secure frames for windows and doors in both wood-framed and metal buildings.

Car Frames
In car frames, steel channels are used to form rails that run from front to back of the vehicle. This gives a vehicle the strength and rigidity it needs to prevent excessive flexing.

Travel Trailers and Recreational Vehicles
Steel channels are also used to build the main frame rails of trailers, as well as tongues that connect the frame rails to the towing vehicle. They are also used to build walls and roof studs for enclosed trailers like box trailers and travel trailers.

Structural Components for Commercial Use
Steel channel is often used to build structural components for commercial buildings, like garages, warehouses, and schools. They are also sometimes used to build frames for commercial fire doors and sub-grade basements.

Single-cranked Beams
A single-cranked steel beam has one bend or “crank” in its shape, making it perfect for situations where a load needs to be transferred around a corner or obstacle. They can be supported, cantilevered or simply curved to meet the unique needs of each application.

When compared to other structural steel products, such as I-beams, steel channel is lighter and slightly more flexible, but it offers less torsional strength, making it prone to twisting under certain conditions. However, it provides more stiffness than flat steel stock and is slightly stronger when utilized longitudinally than angle iron of equal thickness.
